The Board of Directors of the Medical Society of the County of Monroe includes the officers of the Medical Society of the County of Monroe and the hospital representatives, board of censors and delegates to MSSNY.

President
Jerry Svoboda, MD

Dr. Svoboda is board certified in both Surgery and Vascular Surgery and practices with Unity Vascular Surgery, part of Unity Health System. He is a graduate of St. Louis University and Hahnemann Medical College (now part of Drexel Univerity) in Philadelphia. Dr. Svoboda completed his residency at Mercy Medical Center in Denver, his surgical residency at the Guthrie Clinic, in Sayre, Pennsylvania and his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, New Jersey.

Dr. Svoboda began in practice in Rochester in 1984. That same year, he joined the Monroe County Medical Society, and has since held several leadership positions. Dr. Svoboda is also a member of the American Medical Association and the Medical Society of the State of New York. His other professional society memberships include the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery. He is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserve and has served as a surgeon in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dr. Svoboda has been married for 33 years to his wife, Adelaide, who teaches biology at Nazareth College. The couple has two adult children: Mark, who lives in Richmond, Virginia; and Elizabeth, who is a science writer living in San Jose, California

President-Elect
James Szalados, MD, Esq.

Dr. Szalados practices anesthesiology and critical care medicine. He recieved his Medical Doctorate in 1986, Diplomate, American Board of Anesthesiology in 1992, Sub-specialty Certification in Critical Care Medicine in 1993, Master of Business and Master of Health Administration in 1998, and Juris Doctor 2005. He has medical licenses in New York, North Carolina, FLorida, and Pennsylvania.

Dr. Szalados has attained Fellowship status in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Legal Medicine. His Professional Society Memberships include: Monroe County Medical Society, Medical Society of the State of New York, New York State Society of Anesthesiologists; American Society of Anesthesiologists, New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Chest Physicians, New York State Bar Association, American Bar Association (Health Law section), American College of Legal Medicine. He is also admitted to the New York State Bar.

He has 20 years of clinical experience in medicine including surgery, anesthesiology, and critical care, and hospitalist medicine - in both academia and private practice. His past experience in health care leadership include Director, Critical Care Division and Critical Care Educational Program, Director of Clinical Services, Executive Vice-Chair, University Anesthesiology Department, Medical Director of Operating Rooms, Medical Director of Respiratory Care, Vice-President of Medical Affairs / Chief Medical Officer, Leadership positions in local, state and national medical societies. He has co-authored and edited two textbooks in the field of critical care medicine and has been the author of more than two dozen peer-reviewed manuscripts, and over a dozen chapters in medical and legal textbooks. He has presented more than one hundred presentations at regional, national, and international medical symposia.

Vice- President
Leslie F. Algase, MD

Dr. Algase is an internist in private practice with Partners in Internal Medicine in Penfield and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and President of the Rochester District of ACP.  She is a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York. She is a also a member of the Monroe County Board of Health.

Dr. Algase has also been an active member of the Monroe County Medical Society. In addition to her current role as vice-president, Dr. Algase has served the MCMS as a member of the Board of Censors, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary and Vice-President, and president.Dr. Algase is a native of Buffalo, NY. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the State University of New York at Binghamton with a bachelor's degree in biology. Dr. Algase earned her medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester Associated Hospitals Program.Following her post doctoral training, Dr. Algase completed three years of service as a staff internist with the US Air force, before receiving an honorable discharge at the rank of Major.

She is married to Gary Dudek, MD, FCCP, who works with the Pulmonary Division of the University of Rochester. Dr. Algase and her husband have two children: a son who is a graduate student at the University of the Pacific and a daughter who is a senior at Allegheny College.

Secretary
James Fetten, MD

Dr. Fetten is a practicing hematologist/oncologist with the Interlakes Oncology Group which serves the greater Rochester area including the Fingerlakes area to Geneva. He has been a member on the MSSNY since 1991 and Monroe County Medical Society since 1999. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Hematology. Originally from New Jersey, he graduated from Seton Hall University and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. Internal medicine residency training was in the Cornell University Hospital Program in NY and hematology/oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC.

He founded the Western NY Wellness Program in 2003 after a conversation with Lance Armstrong during an early morning bike ride through the mountains of New Mexico. The program was ultimately funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and promotes physical activity for cancer survivors. He is board certified in hematology, medical oncology and internal medicine. He continues to participate in clinical research and contributes to the medical literature. He is married to Michelle Steffers an internist in the MIPS Unit at the University of Rochester and has three children. He enjoys all outdoor activities except golf.

Treasurer
Wallace Johnson, MD

Dr. Johnson  is the Director of the University of Rochester Center for Primary Care (CPC). A practicing primary care general internist with URMC-Eastside Internal Medicine in Fairport, Johnson is also associate chair for Primary Care in the Department of Medicine at the University of Rochester. A graduate of Yale University who received his medical degree summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Johnson served his residency in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital. He currently chairs the Council of the Medical Staff at Strong, and is a member of the boards of directors of the Genesee Valley Medical Foundation and the Visiting Nurse Service.

Assistant Treasurer
Peter Deane, MD

Dr. Deane was born and raised in northern New Jersey. He graduated summa cum laude with honors from the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences in 1983, B.A. Biology.

In 1985 he entered the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and has been in Rochester ever since. He received the Benjamin Rush Award in Psychiatry and graduated M. D. with Honors in 1989. His residency in categorical internal medicine was at Strong Memorial Hospital; combined fellowship training in allergy/immunology and rheumatology was through the U. of R. Medical School Clinical Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology Unit and associated teaching hospitals.

His specialty board certifications are in Internal Medicine in 1992, Allergy and Immunology in 1995 (recertified 2005), Rheumatology in 1996 (recertified 2006), and Clinical Densitometry (which is bone and tissue density scan [DXA] analysis) in 2003. He achieved Fellowship status in the ACR (FACR) in 1997 and in the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (FAAAAI) in 1998. In 2000 he was selected as a Lifetime Member of Strathmore’s Who’s Who. In 2006 he received the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award with Commendation for Continuing Medical Education 2006-2009. He is also a member of the American College of Physician Executives and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.  

At the U. of R. Medical School in 1992 he was named Instructor in Medicine and Emergency Medicine and in 2001 Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics. In this role, he lectures students regularly at the Medical School, and teaches residents in medicine and in pediatrics and fellows in allergy/immunology and in rheumatology. He has been an attending physician at the Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic at Strong Children’s Hospital.

Among his interests is research in both allergic and rheumatic diseases, and he is one of AAIR’s principle investigators for clinical trials for asthma, hay fever, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus, among other ailments.
