Mindful Communication: Bringing Intention, Attention and Reflection to Clinical Effectiveness
Mindful Communication: Bringing Intention, Attention and Reflection to Clinical Practice is a local project funded by Physicians’ Foundation for Health Systems Excellence and sponsored by the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
Mindfulness has been used for over 25 years in medicine and involves maintaining
an open, receptive and nonjudgmental orientation to the present. Mindfulness
has been shown to be an effective adjunct in many areas of medical care especially
where stress plays a significant role.
Mindful Communication can make a positive contribution to physicians lives as
well as improve the quality and effectiveness of their patient care. Mindfulness
enables physicians to observe their thoughts and feelings and to respond intentionally,
avoiding more reflexive or impulsive responses often detrimental to their health,
social relationships and professional effectiveness.
Participation in the Mindful Communication project is free. Participants can
receive up to 50 hours of CME credit and are paid for completing several short
questionnaires measuring wellness and professional satisfaction. Complete confidentiality
is assured.
